The Crooked Hythe – Findochty’s first harbour when the village was established in 1716 eventually became Herd & MacKenzie’s boat yard 1903 where they built steam drifters to supply the booming herring trade.
Findochty Harbour From West
Findochty’s ‘new’ harbour at the Broad Hythe. A new harbour was required to accommodate the bigger boats and the ever growing herring fleet. At first only two quays, one from the east side and one to meet it from the West creating an entrance, were constructed to give shelter to the natural harbour completed in 1880.
Findochty Harbour Completion
The harbour at Broad Hythe was finally completed with a central jetty and deepening the harbour with a surrounding wall and road way between the water and the houses. This was undertaken between the wars the final works visible in the last photo. By this time the motor boat was beginning to take over from the steam drifter.
Cod Laid Out At Cluny Harbour
Buckie harbour was a busy place and the mechanics of coping with the huge herring landings was well organised but the white fish catch was still laid out on the quay. The huge cod were sold individually by weight.
In The Fish Shed, Buckie
Buckie fish selling in the 1950s. Eventually as trade progressed a proper fish selling market was required. The first of such was completed in 1899 but was open to the elements and not until 1930s coinciding with further work deepening the harbour the market was extended, roofed and had iron cladding on the sides. The market was extended again in the 1950s to include a packing station. The market was finally demolished and completely rebuilt in 1992 to meet EC regulation.
Peter Fair 1884c
A fair or ‘great Mercat’ had been held annually at Rathven for many years. First recorded 1686 as a horse and ‘Fee’in’ market held on St, Peter’s day, 29th June. Rathven’s original kirk being dedicated to St. Peter. As agriculture became more organised the market became bigger and the market was moved to a suitably large field in close proximity to the Rathven Railway Station and the trunk road.
Peter Fair 1950s
With more improvements in the lives and wages of agricultural workers the original reason for the market began to change to more of a fun fair and the date was changed to fit in with ‘Trades’ Fortnight’ holidays to the last Friday in July. Though not strictly an agricultural fair it was still a place where people with limited transport would have an annual meet-up. Peter Fair is still held in the same field on the same date in current times.

Strathlene Outdoor Pool
Initially built in 1932 and improved in 1934 by Buckie Town Council to encourage swimming and provide a tourist attraction Strathlene Pool quickly became a much used amenity. Filled with fresh clean sea water and though unheated many Swimming galas and aquatic sports were held to aid local charities. It had its ‘heydays’ in ‘40s, ‘50s, ‘60s but was eventually closed following local government reshuffle and finally abandoned.

Aberlour Parish Church
Aberlour Parish Church which forms one side of the focal square of the town of Charlestown of Aberlour was built to replace the ruinous original one in 1812 by landowner Charles Grant.

Alvah Parish Church
Alvah Parish church rebuilt in 1792 in the characteristic domestic style of country churches on its original hilltop site with magnificent views east into Aberdeenshire.

Banff Parish Church
Banff new Parish church built in 1789 – 90 is fittingly the largest in the county for the county town. For many years the tower stood unfinished until it was completed in 1849 by Thomas Mackenzie of Elgin.

Banff Harbour Railway Station
Opened by the Great North of Scotland Railway in 1860 the Harbour station was one of two stations serving the town. The tracks went right down onto the quay and the line went West to Elgin and Inverness via the Tillynaught Junction.
The New Biggar Fountain
Erected in Low Street in 1878 and gifted to the town in memory of Walter Biggar and his wife Anne. Mr. Biggar is credited with establishing the Continental herring trade bringing great wealth to the town.
Banff Ship Building
Ship building had been done at the West side of the river Deveron estuary at the far end of the Green Banks since early times. In 1798 it was reported that ships of 60tons to 210tons were being produced. The ship on the ‘Slipway’ is a brigantine.
Banff Shoe shop Low Street
A shoe shop, or more correctly a boot shop with a prolific display of goods. Boots were extremely important for everyone but especially the fishermen. Before the days of rubber wellingtons every fisherman wore thigh high, leather, hand-made, boots. With crews up to 8-10 men and hundreds of boats in the harbour that's a lot of boots!
BANFF - Lady Gight's House
A plain three-storeyed building on a site formerly called 'Little Fillacap' belonged to Lady Gight who was George Gordon Byron, 6th Lord Byron's maternal Grandmother. Lord Byron, born in 1788, later became an acclaimed poet but spent his school holidays from Aberdeen Grammar school at this house. The house was demolished in 1869 to make way for the new County Buildings and Sheriff Court.

Banff The Bar across the Deveron
The Bar was a feature at the mouth of the Deveron for centuries and at one time formed an extensive bank of shingle form Palmer Cove on the Macduff side to Rosecraig on the Banff side. It is recorded as far back as 1694 that men had been employed regularly to cut a passage through the bar usually with limited success. The last cutting was in 1915.
Cabrach Parish Church
Cabrach Parish Church rebuilt in 1786 to its current rectangular shape with straight-headed sash windows just like a large house if not for the little bell-cote.

Cullen House Gardens
Cullen House formal walled gardens in their heyday. Created in 1860s and continued until 1970s.
Cullen Old Gas Works
Cullen Gas Works built in 1841 by the Banff & Macduff Gas Light Company giving light to the streets and houses in Cullen but not on a night when there was enough moonlight.

Inveravon Parish Church
Inveravon Parish church built in 1806 in the familiar rectangular style with white-washed harled walls was restored in 1876 when unfortunately it lost all of its original internal fittings but gained a small organ by William Hill of London.
